This guide is written for three kinds of people: those who have never bought USDT, those who have but keep failing at the transfer step, and those worried about being scammed. It starts at opening an exchange account and ends with money sitting in a trading account, and it spells out every step — including the traps the platforms will not mention.

1. Why use USDT instead of a local wallet app

You may find the question odd: I live abroad, why can’t I just use Alipay? Three reasons.

1
Cross-border payment channels are closed to financial platforms
Alipay, WeChat Pay and UnionPay cross-border acquiring explicitly prohibit gambling, binary options and CFD categories. It is not that approval is difficult — the rules say it is not allowed. A merchant ID obtained under a false category gets frozen, balance and all, the moment risk control identifies it.
2
If you live abroad, you should not be using an RMB channel anyway
Funding in RMB ties your money flow back to the mainland. In Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan or the United States, each place has its own legal payment rails. Use the local ones: compliant, cheaper, faster to settle.
3
USDT is, in fact, the most portable option for offshore traders
Whether you are in Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur or Los Angeles, USDT works. It tracks the dollar (1 USDT ≈ 1 USD), settles in 1–3 minutes, and costs under a dollar to send. For cross-border users it is faster than a wire and cheaper than a card.
MethodSettlementFeeUsability abroad
USDT (TRC20)1–3 min~1 USDT Works everywhere
Bank wire1–5 business daysUSD 15–40 + intermediary fees Slow, costly, can be returned
Credit cardInstant3.5%–7% Financial categories often declined
PayPalInstant4.4% + fixed fee Financial speculation explicitly banned

Whichever channel you use, the money is ultimately deducted through the spread: run the gold pip / spread calculator to turn “USD per ounce” into “dollars per lot per round trip”, then compare that against the deposit fees below. Only then do you know which route is genuinely cheap.

2. Choosing an exchange (five compared)

These five are the ones offshore traders use most. All require identity verification, all support Chinese, and all let you buy USDT with local currency.

PlatformBest forC2C feeWithdrawal (TRC20)Minimum buyChinese UI
OKXGlobal (restricted in US/Canada)0%~1 USDT~10 USDT Complete

BybitGlobal0%~1 USDT~10 USDT Complete
BitgetGlobal0%~1 USDT~10 USDT Complete
KrakenEurope / North America (most licensed)0.2%–0.5%~1 USDT~20 USDT△ Partial
What I would do

Taiwan / Hong Kong / Malaysia / Singapore / Vietnam / Thailand use OKX or Bybit (more C2C merchants, full local payment coverage).
United States / Canada use Kraken or Binance.US (regulatory requirement; OKX and Binance’s main site are restricted there).
Europe Kraken or Bitget.

Do not use these

Anyone asking you to “send the coins to our address and we’ll buy on your behalf” — a group, a support agent, a friend — is 100% a scam.
Any merchant offering “cheap USDT, more than 2% below market” — usually dirty money, and your bank account gets dragged into it.
Any tutorial telling you to download an “internal app” or “skip KYC” — that is an instant account ban.

3. Signing up and verifying identity (KYC)

1
Register with an email address, not a phone number
A phone number hard-locks you to a region and is painful to change. Use a dedicated Gmail or Outlook — not your work address, and never the same password you use for banking.
2
Turn on two-factor authentication immediately
Use Google Authenticator or Authy, not SMS (SIM cards can be hijacked). Then write the recovery codes on paper and store them somewhere physical — that is what saves the account if you lose the phone.
3
Complete identity verification (KYC)
You need a passport (first choice, most portable for anyone living abroad) or a national ID or driving licence. When photographing, make sure all four corners are visible, there is no glare, and the text is sharp. Approval usually takes 5–30 minutes, up to 24 hours with manual review.
4
If you are rejected, it is one of these three things 90% of the time
① glare on the document or a cropped corner ② a hat, glasses, or a fringe covering your eyebrows in the selfie ③ the romanised name does not match the document. Re-shoot once and it usually goes through.
What to have ready

Passport or national ID (valid for at least 3 more months)
A phone with a camera
A dedicated email address
5–30 minutes of your time
— Not needed: a local bank card, a local phone number, or proof of address (most platforms do not ask)

4. Buying USDT via C2C (with a scam checklist)

C2C (also called P2P) means the platform matches you directly with another human being. You pay the seller by local bank transfer or e-wallet, they release USDT into your exchange account, and the platform escrows the trade.

1
Open the C2C / P2P section and choose “Buy”
Select your local currency (MYR / TWD / SGD / VND / THB / USD) and enter the amount — 20–50 USDT for the first trade, so you can prove the whole pipeline before scaling up.
2
Filter merchants — none of these six is optional
① Completion rate ≥ 98% (below 95%, skip immediately)
② At least 500 completed orders (do not touch new merchants)
③ Online status is green (grey means they are away and you will wait)
④ Payment method matches yours (DuitNow / bank transfer / GrabPay / Jiekou…)
⑤ Their limits cover your amount (do not click through and then find out)
⑥ Advertised for at least 6 months
3
Pay within 15 minutes of placing the order (it auto-cancels after that)
Transfer to the recipient name, account number and amount shown on the page — the amount must match to the cent (overpaying or underpaying both trigger a dispute). Never write “USDT”, “buying crypto” or “Bitcoin” in the reference field; use “goods” or leave it blank.
4
Click “I have paid” the moment you have
Then wait for the seller to release (usually 1–5 minutes). If they do not, hit “Appeal”; platform support steps in. Your money is in escrow and does not disappear.
5
Confirm the amount once it arrives
The USDT appears in your “funding” or “spot” account. If it lands in the “fiat” account, you must transfer it to spot before you can withdraw.
C2C scams: five absolute red lines

Anyone telling you to “cancel the order and pay me directly” — once cancelled, the escrow is gone and the money goes straight to the fraudster.
Anyone sending the coins from “a different account” — that is laundering, and your bank account can be frozen pending investigation.
Anyone asking you to “release the coins” before paying — the order is always: you pay they release.
Anyone adding you on WeChat or Telegram to “guide you” — a legitimate C2C trade happens entirely inside the platform.
Any “support agent” calling you to walk you through something — platforms do not call. That is impersonation, every time.

5. TRC20 or ERC20? Choosing wrong loses the money

This is the step where beginners lose money most often. USDT exists on several chains, the addresses look similar, and they are completely incompatible — pick the wrong chain and the funds are gone permanently. Support cannot recover them.

NetworkChainAddress prefixTransfer feeSettlementRecommendation
TRC20TRONStarts with T (34 chars)~1 USDT1–3 min First choice
ERC20EthereumStarts with 0x (42 chars)3–20 USDT2–10 min Expensive, avoid
BEP20BNB ChainStarts with 0x (42 chars)~0.3 USDT1–3 min Check platform support
SOLSolanaAlphanumeric~0.01 USDTSeconds Poorly supported
Three iron rules

① The address XAUAD gives you starts with T you must choose TRC20. Choosing ERC20 sends it to the wrong network and the money is gone.
② Send 10 USDT first on any new address; move the real amount only after it lands.
③ Look twice at the “network” dropdown on the withdrawal page — the platform default is not always TRC20.

If you want to check prices around the transfer, look at today’s gold price (live XAU/USD) — the page shows its data source and snapshot time. If the quote looks wrong, do not rush to fund and open a position.

6. Sending to XAUAD (step by step)

1
Get your dedicated address from the XAUAD deposit page
Log in Deposit select TRC20 copy the address starting with T. Every user has a different address; never use someone else’s.
2
On the exchange, click “Withdraw”
Coin: USDT network: TRC20 (important) paste the address enter the amount submit.
3
Check three things before confirming
① does the address start with T ② do the first and last four characters match exactly what XAUAD shows ③ is the network TRC20 rather than ERC20. All three correct, then confirm.
4
Enter your 2FA code and wait 1–3 minutes
The exchange reviews the request first (1–10 minutes), then the chain confirms (about a minute). XAUAD credits the account automatically once it detects the transfer, and you will see the status on the deposit page move from “pending” to “credited”.
5
If it has not landed after 30 minutes, use “Declare deposit” on the XAUAD page
Paste the txid (transaction hash — copyable from the exchange withdrawal record) and the system checks the chain against it. A discrepancy within ±0.5 USDT counts as a match and credits automatically; anything larger goes to manual review, usually handled within an hour.

7. What to do when a transfer fails or does not arrive

SymptomCauseFix
Exchange says “invalid address”Address copied incompletely, or a stray spaceCopy again; confirm 34 characters, starts with T, no spaces
Withdrawal stuck on “under review”First large withdrawal on a new account, or risk controlWait 1–24 hours; if urgent, split into several smaller transfers
Confirmed on-chain but not credited by XAUADNot declared, or the wrong txid enteredUse “Declare deposit” with the txid, or contact support with it
Sent via ERC20 (0x address)Wrong network selectedContact support immediately — it must be recovered manually from the ETH chain; may take hours and incur a fee
Amount is short (fee deducted)Some merchants charge “fees on top”Within ±0.5 USDT the system still credits automatically
USDT shows in the “fiat” accountNot transferredUse “Transfer” on the exchange to move it to spot, then withdraw

8. Withdrawing: from XAUAD back to your bank

Withdrawals run the same route in reverse:

1
Enter your exchange USDT address on the XAUAD withdrawal page
Get the TRC20 deposit address from the exchange’s “Deposit” page (starts with T) and enter it on XAUAD. Fee 5 USDT, minimum withdrawal USD 100, credited within 24 hours after manual review.
2
Once the USDT reaches the exchange, sell it via C2C
C2C “Sell” pick a merchant the platform escrows your USDT the buyer pays you (local bank or wallet) you confirm receipt the platform releases the coins to the buyer.
3
Or simply leave it in USDT
Plenty of offshore traders never convert back — USDT can be spent, swapped or held at any time and sidesteps FX swings. 1 USDT is always roughly 1 US dollar.
When withdrawing

On a C2C sale, wait until the money is genuinely in your account (the bank shows it as available) before clicking “confirm receipt and release”. Some buyers use fake “processing” screenshots; once you release, the money is gone.

Withdrawal times, fee methodology and quote sources are all published on the settlement and data-source disclosure page. That page is updated when the rules change; a support agent’s verbal account does not override it.

9. The full fee table (real numbers)

StepFeeWho charges it
Buying USDT via C2C0%Free on the platform; the cost is inside the rate (typically 0.3%–1% above market)
Exchange withdrawal XAUAD~1 USDTThe exchange (TRC20 network fee)
XAUAD deposit0Not charged
XAUAD withdrawal exchange5 USDTXAUAD (flat; covers the network fee and manual review)
Selling USDT via C2C0%Free on the platform; the rate is slightly below market
Full round trip~6–8 USDT—

In other words: deposit 100 USDT and 100 arrives (you only paid the exchange’s ~1 USDT network fee); on the way out the platform charges 5 USDT.

The “0.3%–1% above market” figure is verifiable: subtract the same-day converted value from the historical gold price and see whether that premium is stable over time. A premium that jumps around means you are being marked up.

10. Twenty common questions

1. I have never bought USDT. How fast can I get this done?
Fifteen minutes once you know what you are doing: 3 minutes to register, 10 for KYC, 2 to buy. The first time may take 30–40 minutes while KYC clears.
2. Do I need a passport, or will an ID card do?
Most platforms accept either. A passport is smoothest for anyone living abroad (some platforms apply extra checks to mainland Chinese ID cards). ID cards and driving licences from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore are all accepted.
3. I am in the US or Canada — can I use OKX?
OKX and Binance’s main site are restricted in the US; you need Binance.US or Kraken. Some Canadian provinces are also restricted, so Kraken is the safer choice.
4. Is C2C safe? Will I get scammed?
As long as everything happens inside the platform, you never cancel an order, and you never pay privately, the money sits in escrow and it is safe. 99% of the scam cases start with “let me guide you on WeChat” or “cancel the order and pay me directly”.
5. Why is the merchant’s price slightly above market?
Because it includes payment-channel costs and their margin. 0.3%–1% is normal. Anything above 3% is either a scam or dirty money.
6. Can I write “buying USDT” in the reference field?
No. Plenty of banks freeze accounts over flagged keywords. Write “goods”, “service fee”, or leave it blank.
7. What is the actual difference between TRC20 and ERC20?
The same coin (USDT) running on different blockchains. TRC20 (TRON) costs about 1 USDT and takes 1–3 minutes; ERC20 (Ethereum) costs 3–20 USDT and takes 2–10 minutes. Always choose TRC20.
8. I accidentally sent via ERC20 — can it be recovered?
Yes, but painfully: it has to be recovered manually from the Ethereum chain, usually hours to days, possibly with a fee. Contact XAUAD support immediately with the txid and do not send again.
9. How long does a transfer take?
Exchange review 1–10 minutes plus about a minute of on-chain confirmation normally 1–3 minutes. First large transfers may take longer to review. On-chain settlement is independent of session hours, but the spread is narrowest when sessions overlap — see the gold session clock (Beijing time).
10. It has been 30 minutes and nothing arrived — is it lost?
Almost certainly not. First use “Declare deposit” with the txid so the system can check the chain record. If you are still uneasy, contact support with the txid.
11. What is the minimum deposit?
XAUAD has no hard minimum, but exchanges impose one on withdrawals (usually around 10 USDT) plus a ~1 USDT network fee. Start with 20–50 USDT to test the pipeline. For physical equivalents, 1 lot = 100 oz ≈ 3.11 kg; use the gram / ounce / kilogram converter.
12. Is there a deposit fee?
XAUAD charges no deposit fee. You only pay the exchange’s network fee (about 1 USDT).
13. How much can I deposit at once?
The platform sets no limit, but exchanges cap single withdrawals (typically tens of thousands of USDT). For large sums, split into batches under 5,000 each — it goes through more smoothly.
14. How long do withdrawals take and what do they cost?
Fee 5 USDT, minimum withdrawal USD 100, credited within 24 hours after manual review for AML purposes.
15. Why is a manual review needed for withdrawals?
To prevent money laundering and account theft. Every regulated platform does it. The first withdrawal may take longer; later ones are quicker.
16. Do I need KYC before withdrawing?
Yes. XAUAD requires completed identity verification to withdraw. It is a compliance requirement, and it also stops someone else from withdrawing your balance.
17. Can I use someone else’s exchange account to fund mine?
Strongly discouraged. Funds arriving from a third-party account trigger AML review and can lead to the deposit being returned or the account frozen. Use your own account.
18. Can I do the whole thing on a phone?
Yes. Registration, KYC, C2C purchases and withdrawals all work in the exchange app and the XAUAD mobile site. The entire flow can be completed on a phone.
19. How do I confirm I used TRC20?
Look at the address: TRC20 addresses start with T and are 34 characters; ERC20/BEP20 start with 0x and are 42. If the address is right, the network is right.
20. I am not technical and I am afraid of making a mistake.
Follow this article in order and send only 10 USDT the first time. Move the real amount once you have seen it land. The cost of getting it wrong is a 1 USDT network fee.

11. Security rules

Save this and read it before every transfer

Turn on 2FA at the exchange (Google Authenticator, not SMS)
Write recovery codes on paper; do not keep them only on your phone
Use a unique exchange password, never reused anywhere else
Test a new withdrawal address with a small amount first
Verify the address by its first and last four characters
Choose TRC20 and nothing else
Any “support agent” calling you to walk you through something = fraud
Any “cheap USDT” or “internal channel” = fraud
Anyone asking you to cancel an order and pay privately = fraud
Never move large sums over public WiFi

Once funded, how do you check the platform is genuinely matching orders? Look at fills and drawdowns on the live leaderboard and cross-check them against the settlement disclosure. That is more direct than any marketing page.
