How many grams in a tael? Full conversion table
Tael · mace · candareen · gram · ounce — every conversion | XAUAD · updated October 2026
At a jewellery shop the staff talk in taels and mace. Online, the international gold price is quoted per ounce. Mixing the two systems is the single most common reason people get a gold price calculation wrong. This page explains both systems side by side, with a live converter.
1. The short answer
One mace = 3.75 grams · One candareen = 0.375 grams
One troy ounce = 31.1035 grams
2. Taiwanese tael vs international units — where the 20% comes from
| Unit | Equals | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| 1 tael (台兩) | 37.5 g | Taiwanese jewellery shops |
| 1 mace (錢) | 3.75 g | Taiwanese jewellery shops |
| 1 candareen (分) | 0.375 g | Taiwanese jewellery shops |
| 1 gram | 1 g | Bank gold passbooks |
| 1 troy ounce | 31.1035 g | Spot gold, futures |
| 1 avoirdupois ounce | 28.3495 g | ⚠️ Never used for gold |
| 1 mainland liang (市兩) | 50 g | ⚠️ Different from the Taiwanese tael |
3. What does one tael cost? (live calculator)
4. Conversion formulas
- Price per gram = (USD per ounce ÷ 31.1035) × FX rate
- Price per tael = price per gram × 37.5
- Price per mace = price per gram × 3.75
Example: gold at 4,180 USD/oz with an FX rate of 31.5 gives 4,234 per gram, so 158,775 per tael and 15,878 per mace.
5. Why the jewellery shop price differs from spot
A shop's board price is normally higher than the converted spot price, for three reasons:
- Fabrication cost (for jewellery) — a few hundred per mace
- Bid/ask spread — they sell to you above their buy-back price
- FX markup — shop currency conversion costs more than a bank's
So do not argue about price using the international spot quote — they are two different pricing systems. To compare, look at the price per mace or per gram.
6. Which unit should you use?
| How you invest | Quoted in |
|---|---|
| Jewellery, small bars | Mace / tael |
| Bank gold passbook | Grams |
| Gold ETF | Shares (tracks the ounce price) |
| Spot XAU/USD | Ounces (USD) |
